Identifying Forces Produced

by the Malocclusion

Archwires placed during initial phases of treatment encounter wire/bracket angles that produce a myriad of force systems. The result is that problems are often created during treatment that were not present in the original malocclusion.

It is not difficult to avoid these problems, but it is essential that the orthodontist recognize what force systems are produced during the initial stages of treatment so that undesirable tooth movement may be avoided. Interestingly, the solution to this problem lies in less effort – not more.

Very few orthodontists recognize these force systems at the onset of treatment and as a result frequently utilize additional appliances, such as lingual archs and/or palatal arches for control. However, the use of such appliances not only takes more time for the orthodontist, but adds to the overhead, and helps to prevent the teeth from adjusting to the environmental and functional factors that occur daily.
