Newton's Laws

Principles involve a set of truths that can generally be relied upon, but not without exception. Laws, however, involve a set of truths that can be relied upon, but without exception. All laws can be challenged, but if successfully challenged, such laws will no longer remain as laws.

The laws of equilibrium regarding tooth position cannot be ignored. Regardless of what forces and moments are utilized for orthodontic tooth movement, equilibrium will be established. These so-called “balancing forces” and “balancing moments” frequently create problems, not predicted beforehand, due to failure on the part of the operator to appreciate the requirements for equilibrium.

No longer should any orthodontist look only at one end of the archwire. Equilibrium will take place within the entire dentition with or without its recognition by the operator.

The majority of “laboratory appliances” can be eliminated when the orthodontist recognizes the balancing systems.
