Open Bites

The subject of “Open Bites” is discussed and numerous solutions presented which require no more than an understanding of the mechanics presented in Common Sense Mechanic.

Understand easily produced force systems in a manner that will provide the opportunity for open bite corrections in numerous situations involved in the daily practice of orthodontics.

Understand why force systems associated with particular types of tooth movement, often result in anterior or posterior open bites during orthodontic tooth movement. Such open bite creation is predictable and therefore avoidable.

The advantage of archwire removal is demonstrated and should lead to the routine removal of archwires in every patient regardless of the severity of the malocclusion. The functional and environmental influences will be fully appreciated when archwire removal becomes a routine part of orthodontic treatment.

The days of permanent retention should come to an end.
